Not sure what would be the most appropriate words to perfectly describe Lucian Matis‘ work. Back in October, while photographing his spring 2010 collection, I was talking to him and his eyes lit up as he kindly shared his new vision, a collection that would incorporate traditional Romanian elements. I was so very pleased to hear that and I knew the project would be fantastic. But I could have not possibly imagined to which extent his imagination and powerful creativity would stretch and marvel us all. I was blown away! While in prep room, Lucian showed me a few authentic items brought from little Romanian villages: a hand made shirt with fine embroidery, the kind my grandma use to sew and wear; beautiful wool vests; a skirt with a motif based on religious figures. Lucian is an artist whose eyes sparkle with love for his creations. Last Thursday I have been on such a journey: visually captivating elements (rich textures, warm tones, fantastic lines paired up with amazing jewellery), all this mixed with a real passion for our Romanian heritage. The result: a truly emotional experience. I managed to find a decent spot by the catwalk and got shivers down my spine at the sight of all that shining beauty graciously walking on the sound of a remixed famous Romanian balad: “Lume, Soro Lume”. I truly felt it was my heart making my camera click. Amazing!!
