A creative winter photo shoot with beautiful Alice

Alice came to Toronto to study English. Originally from Brazil, this beautiful young woman will be here for a few more months.
She has played cello since childhood and she wanted to incorporate this part of herself into the photos, while using the wintery landscape as backdrop (something she does not experience back home).

Meeting Alice and working together was a true delight on all levels. We went on a little adventure together and, in spite of the cold, we both enjoyed it thoroughly. The sun surely helped!

Alice, I hope these photos will always make you remember Toronto and bring a smile on your gorgeous face! Hugs, M.

Dancer in the snow

Once in a while our boundaries are stretched. When this happens creatively, an artist could not wish for more. When Kristina contacted me for a special dance shoot, I did not really know what shape and form this experience was going to take. After our first chat, I started getting visions…of nature…snow…and ultimately, horses (hmmm…are you surprised???).
Kristina seemed really taken with the idea and, whatever seemed a bit impossible a few weeks ago, came to life one beautiful snowy day.
One thing led to another and I was impeccably guided to the right place: the fabulous Whinny Acres. Debbie, the owner, generously offered the property and horses to us and we just played…and played…until Kristina could not feel her feet anymore. Luckily, we had a little warm hut to go in and out of, so my model could graciously stand in front of the camera for a few minutes each time. Well…needless to say it was all worthwhile. We drove back home talking about every second of our adventure while being amazed and grateful for how it has unfolded for us. A serendipitous creative journey!

Kristina: may these photographs bring smiles on your face every time you look at them.

Debbie @ Whinny Acres: thank you…and hope to visit again soon!

Merry Christmas!!! Yours, Manuela.

Lucian Matis at LG Fashion Week, Fall 2010 collection

Not sure what would be the most appropriate words to perfectly describe Lucian Matis‘ work. Back in October, while photographing his spring 2010 collection, I was talking to him and his eyes lit up as he kindly shared his new vision, a collection that would incorporate traditional Romanian elements. I was so very pleased to hear that and I knew the project would be fantastic. But I could have not possibly imagined to which extent his imagination and powerful creativity would stretch and marvel us all. I was blown away! While in prep room, Lucian showed me a few authentic¬† items brought from little Romanian villages: a hand made shirt with fine embroidery, the kind my grandma use to sew and wear; beautiful wool vests; a skirt with a motif based on religious figures. Lucian is an artist whose eyes sparkle with love for his creations. Last Thursday I have been on such a journey: visually captivating elements (rich textures, warm tones, fantastic lines paired up with amazing jewellery), all this mixed with a real passion for our Romanian heritage. The result: a truly emotional experience. I managed to find a decent spot by the catwalk and got shivers down my spine at the sight of all that shining beauty graciously walking on the sound of a remixed famous Romanian balad: “Lume, Soro Lume”. I truly felt it was my heart making my camera click. Amazing!!

Lucian Matis, behind the scenes at LG Fashion Week

On Friday evening I had the privilege to meet the super talented and uniquely creative, Lucian Matis.  Proud to say he is coming from the same country as myself, lovely Romania and we share a passion for our amazing heritage.

Lucian and his associate director, superb fashion photographer Arline Malakian, introduced me to an unexpected world of silky textures, elegance, soft colour tones, in two words: pure fascination. This is how I felt among the super slim and tall models with their almost surreal aura, looking like they were coming from a different time and space. I have floated in an impossible to anticipate type of reality and my head has been spinning not knowing exactly where to look first.

The emotion was intense, especially when the girls started on the runway. We watched from behind the scenes in a state of awe and deep admiration for what Lucian was able to create this time around.

Congratulations for yet another spectacular achievement!
